BRIDESMAIDS (2011). So! Like. This movie. It’s supposed to save women in comedy or women and comedy or something! And it’s the Hangover or the anti-Hangover, and a social statement or a statement about How Things Are. Or. Something! But really, just shut up and stop. Stop projecting all your Feeeeeelings re: women on this movie, and actually unhook your shrill, screaming analytical super ego and enjoy this movie. Because it is very, very funny, and very, very sharp, and subtle in ways that can’t percolate down when you’ve got your Social Analyst helmet on. It’s a movie that understands friendship, with all its sweetness but also all its sour envy, and combines that with a fine-grained appreciation of the infinite grades of insecurity to make what is, on the whole, a very solid, very human, and very funny film. But most importantly, it can whip up a hell of a montage. Like. So many montages. So good.
